I am improving the monthly ID Challenge! contest by appealing to those of you who want to win a donation to a charity that YOU support. I originally started the ID Challenge! to encourage readers to learn about nature. For many of us, time is always in short supply. Things we’d like to do often fall behind things we must do.
Birder’s Lounge readers share a love of nature, with varied specific interests. There are many charities/non-profit organizations with missions to protect and aid our planet’s flora and fauna. While it may be hard for us to justify time to participate in a contest for a prize for ourselves, it may be worth a few minutes to attempt to help a cause we care about. This is what I believe, and the great thing is, participants will still wind up learning a bit more about nature!
So the new and improved monthly ID Challenge contest will offer a standing prize of a $10 donation to the winner’s charity of choice! The only stipulation is that the charity/non-profit organization be related to nature/conservation/wildlife.
With that, here are the photos for the March, 2009 edition of the Birder’s Lounge ID Challenge!
- Picture 1 | Plano, TX | Downy Woodpecker
- Picture 2 | Plano, TX | Leopard Frog
- Picture 3 | Plano, TX | Sycamore Tree
Note on Picture 2: I disturbed him while pulling up non-native parrot-feather in my frog pond…it is about a month before he would like to come up on his own! I returned him to his hidie-hole, and decided to get the rest of the parrot-feather later.

I’ll take a crack at it! Not sure what part of the third picture we are suppose to ID? My guess was for the “grayish green” part
Let me clarify the tree photo – I had another question about it. I am simply wondering if anyone can identify the kind/species of tree, based on its distinctive bark! Remember, multiple entries are welcome.
