Spring Break is often associated with teenagers flocking to sunny beaches and “strutting their stuff.” Birds and other wildlife are busy celebrating spring in much the same way! For my spring break, I worked through most of it, but took the last few days and final weekend off to experience spring through the eyes of children. I helped my niece and other children see nature’s “spring break” up close, by taking my scope and binoculars to a local park. There’s nothing quite like the earnest, searching expression of a child looking through binoculars and breaking into a huge smile. The smiles were followed closely by exclamations of “wow!” and in one case, “gross!”
Other great news from spring break – Birder’s Lounge had another Do-Gooder share his conservation Actions! Woohoo! Here is his list of what he’s done, and his Actions have raised the Birder’s Lounge pledge another $7. Thanks!! Anyone Else?
1. HELPED RAISE AWARENESS that everything we do affects the well-being of other creatures,
2. GAVE SOME OF MY OWN HABITAT back to nature,
3. PLANTED A NATIVE TREE on my property,
4. REDUCED OR ELIMINATED my use of pesticides and synthetic fertilizers,
5. VISITED a state park, national park, or wildlife refuge,
6. IDENTIFIED & LEARNED about one bird that I was unfamiliar with,
7. DONATED TIME OR MONEY to an organization that is dedicated to protecting and preserving habitats and wildlife

What elicited the “Gross!” comment?
AJ – The young man who saw the school of small fish nibbling at a crust of bread floating in the pond! I told him that it wasn’t “gross,” it was “cool!”
Just look at the feet on that Coot. He’s really made for the water, isn’t he? Too, bad one of them was injured, but he looks fat enough so I guess all’s well. I’m glad you took some time to increase awareness of the marvelous natural world around us. Every little bit helps.
