Road Trip – Riverside, MO
I’ve just finished processing pictures from my 3-day trip to Riverside, Missouri. I have a great lineup of images and information to share – probably over 2 posts. For starters, let me introduce you to part of the Missouri River:
This view of the Missouri River is from a new park in Riverside, specially designed to withstand being completely submerged in flood conditions. Damaging floods occurred in 1925, 1927, 1944, 1951, 1973, 1982 and 1993.1 The City History page of Riverside”s website says:
It’s believed that the worst flood was the famous 1993 disaster when waters rose to nearly the heart of the city, inundating scores of businesses along Highway 9 and causing millions in damage.
…No wonder they built a submersible park!
Here is a map to give you an idea of where I was standing when I took this photo:
While visiting family in Missouri, we also managed to fit in a trip to Weston Bend State Park, where I was delighted to see this sign:
I also made a brief visit to Honker Cove Waterfowl Refuge on Smithville Lake where we picked our way carefully through a narrow, poison ivy-lined trail, to the shoreline:
I had a great trip and a fun time exploring the area – look for more on this trip in the next couple of posts.

You are such a tease Amber. Where are the bird photos? Come on, out with them
I should be able to put them up tomorrow, but don’t set your expectations too high!
I’ve been so busy these past six months that I haven’t been able to get out and about like I wanted. I envy you the opportunity to do some traveling. I’m hoping to get in a few road trips in the coming months (starting this weekend with a trip to the family farm in East Texas).
This looks like it was a good trip. I can’t wait to see what you discovered along the way.
That looks like good tiger beetle habitat
