California Brown Pelicans Flooding Into Rescue Facilities
Hundreds of sick and starving Brown Pelicans have been admitted to the IBRRC’s two clinics in California since January 1. This huge influx of Brown Pelicans in need of care is a direct result of the polluted runoff from storms that have been battering the California coast. Pollutants int he water strip the pelicans of their natural water-proofing oils, leaving the birds defenseless against the elements. The following video is a recent news video from KTLA-TV, in California:
The International Bird Rescue Research Center (IBRRC) and three other area wildlife rescue and rehabilitation facilities have issued this joint NEWS RELEASE: Pelican Crisis Pushes California Wildlife Groups to Breaking Point (PDF)
If you would like to contribute toward the effort to help these pelicans, please see the donations page at IBRRC.

Thanks for your continued support for this incredible organization Amber. I urge everyone involved with 10000 Birds Conservation Club to vote yes for a donation from the conservation club to this cause as well.
Whenever possible to aid in a huge conservation effort like this, when we can save hundreds of birds at a time, I believe it is one of the best uses of our funds.
Thanks, Larry. After visiting the Los Angeles location last year, I can just imagine the commotion that so many pelicans must bring. Thank goodness for the IBRRC!
I read about this in the LATimes. The pelicans are having problems all along the coast from Washington down to Baja. It’s very strange and very unfortunate. Thank you for mentioning this, Amber.
I think the problem is directly related to the pollutants in the water. That’s the word over at IBRRC. At least pollution is something that we can fix – we just have change our ways!
