Everyone likes rainbows – they are not uncommon, but it still feels special when you spot one. I took this picture on the evening of May 4, after the rain stopped.
NOAA offers a brief but helpful explanation about the causes of rainbows.
The very next morning after I snapped this picture, I stepped out onto my back patio – and thought my lawn furniture was on fire:
I have never seen anything like this! This is evaporation of the water that soaked my lawn furniture the prior evening.

thanks for the explanation! i have lived in Northern California for just over a year, and i had NO idea what caused the “steam” that I thought was “smoke” when i first saw it on the roof of my apt.
Yeah, and the thing is – you have to see it in the right light – or you don’t see it at all. Pictures from the opposite side of the lawn furniture showed almost nothing.
Great pictures! I always enjoy your interesting posts
Thanks, Kay. This isn’t my “normal” kind of post, but I just had to share.
What a beautiful rainbow..we had some steam coming off the pond today with the rain and humidity..
I’m always one to stop and stare at a rainbow. It’s such easy physics to understand, yet they’re so magical.
And I love the animation, Amber. Very cool.
That was just plain crazy!!! Great miniclip, Amber.
I know! It was hard to believe it, even while I was standing there taking pictures.
